Frequently Asked Questions
Do learners have snack time?
Learners are empowered to eat their snack during the day if/when they feel hungry. Please send a nut-free, snack-size, healthy option (banana, apple slices, carrots, celery, goldfish, granola bars, crackers, pretzels, etc...) that can be enjoyed WITHOUT utensils. No liquids (dipping sauces or yogurt) should be sent for snack. Learners will be taught the appropriate times to enjoy their snack if needed.
Do learners have homework?
In 1st grade, your child will not be getting homework "pages/sheets." However, we highly encourage that you work with your child on their High Frequency Word (HFW or Sight Words), read daily for at least 7 minutes, and use the resources on learner links to explore and reinforce the learning we do in the classroom. Seesaw is also a great way to see and ask what your child is working on.

GT (Gifted and Talented) related questions.
For questions about GT (Gifted and Talented), please reach out to our GT Specialist, Ayesha Khan, at [email protected].
How do I know what specials my learner will go to each day?
Our school rotates specials on a seven day schedule. You can find this rotation and the calendar on the "Schedule" page of our class website. Please remember to send your learner to school in tennis shoes on days that we have PE. This will help them stay safe and have fun during PE time.
Can I volunteer in the classroom?
I would LOVE to have you to volunteer in our classroom. Before you can visit our classroom, you must fill our a Volunteer Background Check form which can be found under the "Parent Resources" section of our website. If you plan on volunteering, please email me so we can work together to find a time and activity that works best for our class schedule.
What do I do if I have to change the way my learner will go home one day?
If you know you need to change one or two days in advance, please email me with the information. If you do not know 24 hours in advance, you have a "same day dismissal change." it is IMPERATIVE that you call the front office ASAP to inform them of the change. They will contact with me (or the substitute) before the end of the day. Sending an email or telling your child to tell me will not change your child's dismissal plan if it is occurs on the same day. This ensures your child's safety, please understand that I will not send a learner home a different way than our normal plan without your notification.
Birthday Celebrations?
As school wide, due to allergies and food restrictions there will be no treats (cupcakes, cakes, candies, chocolates), goodie bags, nor balloons permitted for birthday celebrations. However, all learners will be recognized on the morning broadcast. The learner will also receive a birthday surprise from the front office and I will acknowledge the learner's birthday in class.
Snacks and Lunch Information
- Please make sure to bring a healthy snack that is nut free (any tree nut) and doesn't require the use of utensils. We have a lot of allergies this year. Some great examples of healthy snacks are: already cut up/ peeled fruit, nut free granola bars, cheez its or goldfish, pretzels, carrot sticks etc.
- Learners may not have lunches dropped off in the office anymore. If a learner is going to eat a packed lunch from home, they must bring it with them in the morning. If they do not have their lunch with them in the morning, they can purchase a lunch in the cafeteria line. You may bring lunch and eat with your learner. Parents can sign up for low balance alerts through MySchoolBucks.com. Also, if parents have meal restrictions for your child, you can call (214-496-7978), write a note to be handed to the cafeteria mamager, or let the cafeteria manager know in person. THANK YOU!
- Learners may bring an appropriately sized water bottle that can be operated independently. Please write your child's name and Y1B on their water bottles. If the water bottles get misplaced or lost through the year it will be easier to locate it.
